Title

The myth of long-term stability

Abstract

Long-term stability is often considered to be a myth as relapse and maturation changes occur in the dental arches. Therefore, long-term, or even life-long retention is being increasingly used among clinicians. Bonded retainers can provide an efficient method of retention, particularly because they require minimal compliance from patients. However, the use of bonded retainers is frequently associated with various complications and unexpected tooth movement with potentially severe clinical consequences.
