Title
Clinical aspects of treating ankylosed teeth
Abstract
The treatment of traumatized or PFE-affected teeth represents a not-frequent but very difficult problem in orthodontics. By means of an orthodontic-surgical approach – e.g., osteodistraction - is possible to align these displaced and ankylosed teeth. Osteodistraction is a surgical procedure involving new bone formation between vascularized bone surfaces following a corticotomy as a result of regular distraction and is obtained through orthodontic appliances or functionally stable devices. This therapeutic principle was further introduced to craniofacial and dentoalveolar surgery for displacing alveolar areas containing mispositioned implants or ankylosed teeth in infraposition.
In the course of the presentation, guidelines concerning the combined treatment of orthodontics and distraction, as well as the use of a tooth-supported osteodistractor for multidimensional distraction, will be shown. Clinical and radiological results will be illustrated and critically discussed, particularly in relation to bone conditions and gingival development.
